One the newer programs Youth Endeavors offers, the Food and Garden program is a unique opportunity for children ages 12-18.
Children will learn to grow, harvest and cook fresh ingredients of their choice. They will embark on educational and fun field trips to local farms with our adult chaperones. Here, they will learn to care for baby chicks and even bring some fresh eggs and milk home to cook with. With every school that chooses to partner with us for this program, we are happy to provide transportation for all the participants from school, to our facility and field trips, and to home as well. Why is playing outside important? Learning in the classroom is traditional, however, it can be boring. Studies have shown children become more engaged and learn more in curriculum-based outdoor programs. These are five benefits children receive when playing outside:
1. Children who play outside are more active, thus being more physically fit. Playing outside helps prevent obesity and promotes a healthy lifestyle. 2. Studies have shown that exposing children to nature improves their motor skills. 3. Schools that offer forms of environmental education score higher on standardized tests. 4. Playing outside raises vitamin D intake, which strengthens bones and the immune system. 5. By being exposed to nature at a young age, children are likely to form a lifelong bond with nature. Ultimately learning to love, respect and preserve the environment. Kids and adolescents are naturally drawn to playing outside. Let's encourage the future generations to embrace the outdoors! |
